Oscar died on January 13, 1968, at age 75 in the Lubbock Methodist Hospital. Oscar’s and Flora’s descendant chart is below.
The photo of Oscar’s family below, graciously provided by Reverend Jack Warren, was probably taken in the mid to late 1940s. He worked for Cline & Rainer and signed the draft card. Oscar’s World War II draft card, completed in 1942, is below. It’s possible Oscar sold his share of ownership and became a laborer between the decade of census data. It’s good to keep in mind that many inaccuracies are found in census data whether it be due to the census taker or the person responding to the census questions. He was now shown as a laborer for a wholesale gasoline station instead of part owner as reported in 1920. The 1940 census reflected that Oscar continued living in Floydada but had moved his family to 102 Jeffie Avenue. In 1935, Oscar and Flora had another daughter, Mary “Darlynn.” Darlynn’s recorded birth is shown below. Oscar, Flora, and Alene lived at 218 East Kentucky Street. In 1930, Oscar was 38 and part owner of a filling station in Floydada. Zelma’s birth certificate, death certificate, and Find A Grave Memorial are below.
She died as a result of the same kidney disease, nephritis, that caused the death of her Grandpa Russell but her grandpa had lived a full life. Sadly, Oscar’s and Flora’s first-born, Zelma, died a month before her 3rd birthday in 1922. Second-born daughter, Joyce “Alene” was born Jin Floydada. Their first-born child, Zelma, was a few months old at the time of the census in January 1920. In 1920, Oscar and Flora were farming in Lockney, a community 12 miles from Floydada traveling north on Hiway 70. Some public records show that Oscar was born in Hunt County but Oscar self reported on both WWI & WWII draft cards that he was born in Bonham, Fannin County. Oscar’s draft card below indicates he was short, had a medium build, dark hair, light blue eyes and was not bald. At age 25, he registered for the draft due to World War I.
He met Flora Dean Nolan and they married on June 18, 1916. Oscar was 22 when the family moved from Hunt County to Floyd County, Texas, in 1914. Seven younger siblings (Alice, Elmer, Homer, Fred, Irene, and Wade) lived at home and the older attended school. Oscar was 18 at the 1910 census and worked as a laborer on his parents farm. His father and mother farmed and he had two younger siblings, Alice and Elmer. In 1900, at the age of eight, Oscar lived in Rains County, Texas. His older sister, Mellie Pearl, died as an infant a year before he was born. He was the second-born child of Great Uncle Russell Ewing and Great Aunt Laura (Parrish) Warren. My first cousin once removed, James “Oscar” Warren, was born in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas, on January 22, 1982.
